Pilotage areas

The Dutch marine pilots operate in all the ports of the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde. There is, however, a special arrangement with the Flemish Ports of Antwerp and Gent. This stipulates that the Dutch pilots are responsible for 27,5 % of all shipping to Antwerp and Gent, whereas the Flemish pilots undertake 72,5 % of the work. The Schelde region is also unique in other aspects. The river is very curvaceous and is considered one of the most difficult to navigate in the world.
